Chapter Seven

Valentina

Ican tell that Jaxon is nervous, which is strange to me. He’s such a big, confident, stoic guy, but it’s like kissing me broke something open inside of him. There’s a vulnerability to him now that he was able to keep hidden before, but now I can see the real him, and I like it.

I like how he challenges me. How he doesn’t treat me like I’m breakable but is still protective of me in a way that I’ve never experienced before. Like he’s not just protective of me, but possessive of me, too. And I like the way his eyes wrinkle when he smiles. Not to mention his tattoos, and how his t-shirt stretches across his muscles, and how his jeans hang low on his hips. I like him.

A lot.

And I think the feeling is mutual, which would explain his nerves.

As we get closer to his sister’s house, he seems to relax some, even reaching over to take my hand, pulling it into his lap. He gives me the quick run-down on his sister. Her name is Addison Oakley. She’s a nurse at Oakwood City Medical Center, has two kids under the age of five, and her husband died overseas when the youngest was just an infant.

“She’s been through it,” Jaxon says. “But I think you’ll like her.”

I just hope she likes me, too. For so long, I’ve worried about fitting in with the Oakwood Club crowd—the kids who grew up with money and status. I’ve been putting on a show for them for years. Now, I need to put all that aside, because I know that someone like Addison will be able to see right through me, just like her brother. Winning her favor feels important because I know it’s important to Jaxon.

The house is a small, brick box, but the yard is neat and there are planter boxes under the windows that show someone loves it. In the backyard, I can see one of those red-and-blue plastic slides for kids. Jaxon doesn’t knock, just opens the door and walks right in. The house is hot and smells like cooking meat. It isn’t unpleasant. It’s homey.

We follow the scent to the kitchen, where a tall, shapely version of Jaxon stands over the stove. She’s wearing blue scrubs, and her straight auburn hair is pulled up in a ponytail that hangs down her back. There’s a kid in a highchair at the dining table who seems to be coloring with tomato sauce. The other kid is nowhere to be seen.

“Jaxon!” She seems relieved as she wipes her hands on a blue-and-white dish towel and crosses the galley kitchen to hug her brother. I stand awkwardly to the side, waiting to be introduced. “Who is this?” Addison asks when Jaxon releases her.

“This is Valentina,” Jaxon says. He doesn’t preface it with “my friend” or “my client,” and I can tell from the brief look of confusion on her face that she has no idea who I am.

But she still takes my hand, shaking it and smiling warmly.
